DSLR cameras seem to be following the rapid growth of microprocessors. I suspect that imaging technology will follow Moore's Law and double every 18 months to two years giving us 100M/pixel Cameras in 2012 with added Wi-fi and GPS at consumer prices.
Each 300mm wafer can yield approx. 60, 24 x 36 mm sensors. A typical facility can produce 20,000 wafers/month.
